In this post I am going to share with you my methods of keeping a PC clean of spyware, malware, virusus, hackers and other unwanted exploits, using nothing but Free Software! Of course, if you have a budget, you could buy the best security systems, but also keep in mind that there are many excellent Free Programs available for download on the internet, and by using the right combination of software and utilities, you can make your system almost immune to spyware, protected against hackers, and shielded from viruses and trojan horses - at no cost whatsoever.

So let’s start with two basic Free programs, Anti-Virus and Firewall Software. These two are very important. Anti-Virus software does not only scan your computer for viruses, it also protects your PC in real time using anti-virus shields. A Firewall is software that will keep hackers and other unwanted guests out the door. It also gives you control over which applications are allowed to make connections to the internet.

Now that we have basic protection against viruses and hackers, we are on our way to a safer computer system. However, these two programs are simply not enough to keep our PC’s clean and unexploited. Outpost Firewall also gives us some protection against spyware with a shield and a cleaner, but we are going to need a lot more security measures to keep us protected from these spies - commercial companies using tracking software to record our online behavior.

So what we need next is installing Anti-Spyware Software. There are tons of free anti-spyware programs out there, so you’ll have to be careful and do not just download anything. For years I have been using a free program called HitMan Pro, which is actually a bundle of some of the best anti-spyware programs out there. It also fixes other exploits, and it looks for windows updates that are normally not included with the windows automatic update service.

So if you think that was about enough protection, then you’re wrong. You are not yet optimally protected against the threats of the internet. In case you are still using Microsoft’s Internet Explorer brower, then it’s definitely time to get rid of that monster, and start using Firefox! To keep it short, most malware is actually designed to infect your system through Internet Explorer, and it’s full of exploits. Moreover, firefox offers you the ability to extend your browser with addons that offer extra functionality.

One addon I have been using for awhile is No-Script. This plugin will disable JavaScript, Java and Flash in your browser, by default. You can now permanently enable or disable Scripts for certain websites, simply by clicking the icon in your statusbar. It takes awhile to get used to, but this addon makes your browser a whole lot safer by preventing exploitation of security vulnerabilities.

Last, but defiantly not Least I recommend using this free IP-Blocking tool that currently blocks over 7.5 Million bad IP Addresses. This application was originally meant to protect p2p users from bad connections, such as fake p2p servers and government IP’s. But PeerGuardian 2 also has an HTTP Block option which Drops Invalid packets (HTTP requests) from blacklisted IP addresses. The lists can be updated automatically, and you also have to option to add your own list of IP address to block.

With all these security measures in place, you should now rarely detect any sypware or viruses on your system. I run virus and spyware scans twice per month, and the last time I had a small infection was months ago. However, it depends on your surf behavoir and particuarely the websites you visit and stuff you download whether you get infected a lot.

Nowadays more and more internet security software companies are bundling their programs in expensive packages. Symantec Norton personal firewall, or Sygate, is now integrated in Norton internet security and is no longer available as stand alone program. Grisoft AVG also offers internet security bundles with a build in firewall for intrusion protection.

These bundles also offer protection from virusses, spyware, malware, tracking cookies, trojan horses and keyloggers. Therefor these internet security bundles are well suited for the average internet user. But what if you don’t need all these additional programs, what if your computer is already protected against viruses and spyware by the installation of 3rd party software such as kaspersky, nod32, spydoctor, ad-aware, spysweeper etc. In these situations it is not recommended to install such a bundle, because it could lead to compatibility issues.

Most internet security bundles are making use of various virus / spyware protection shields that prevent these malicious programs from infecting your computer. These shields offer excellent protection from spyware and viruses before they even get the change to infect your system. However, using different programs with several protection shields may cause conflicts with the software.

A teacher in Russia must pay off half a month salary, because he illegally installed microsoft software on a number of computers in the school where he teaches. Alexander Ponosov would have violated Microsoft’s copyright, by installing Microsoft Windows and Office programs on twelve school computers.

Ponosov claims that he never knew he had bought illegal versions of the software at a local trader. The teacher has been condemned to pay 5,000 roubles (approximately 200 US dollar) to Microsoft. Ponosov himslef, who still believes that he is innocent, is going in appeal against this pronouncement.

The case draws growing attention now that the Kremlin has expressed itself on the matter. The Russian president Putin called the charge “ridiculous” and “out of proportion”. On Russian state television - in hands of the government - Ponosov is put down as a hero who dares against the powerful multinational from the United States.

Because Russia wants to join the world trade organization, does try to end the widespread trade in illegal software, films and music, and acts against contravener.

SANTIAGO - Chile is angry with Google Earth, because on the satellite picture program, the Chilean village Villa o Higgins has been placed on the Argentinian side of the border. The people behind the successful free online encyclopedia Wikipedia have chosen the lucrative Internet search market as their new challenge. They want to develop a search engine and compete with market leaders Google and Yahoo.

Wikia, the commercial branch of nonprofit organisation Wikipedia, plans to capture five percent of search market. Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales said this during a press meeting in Tokyo.

The idea that Google has so much strength because they have such fantastic scientists in service has become obsolete, thinks wales. He sees Google and Yahoo as ‘black boxes’ that don’t want to reveal how they classify their search results. According to Wales open search technology could change the influence structure of the Internet, users could work collaboratively for improving search engines.
