Wikia Search Engine to Challenge Google and Yahoo
The people behind the successful free online encyclopedia Wikipedia have chosen the lucrative Internet search market as their new challenge. They want to develop a search engine and compete with market leaders Google and Yahoo.
Wikia, the commercial branch of nonprofit organisation Wikipedia, plans to capture five percent of search market. Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales said this during a press meeting in Tokyo.
The idea that Google has so much strength because they have such fantastic scientists in service has become obsolete, thinks wales. He sees Google and Yahoo as ‘black boxes’ that don’t want to reveal how they classify their search results. According to Wales open search technology could change the influence structure of the Internet, users could work collaboratively for improving search engines.
